The gallery’s annual DIRECTOR’S CHOICE exhibition ends Saturday 23 December, celebrating the end of 3 years of presenting and supporting Newcastle emerging and established artists. The exhibition is made up of both new work and previously exhibited work curated by the Director, Ahn Wells. It’s become an important exhibition in the gallery’s calander and one that provides the Director with a chance to have some fun with the curatorial process.

 “This is my favourite time of year. This time, I’ve been able to visit a few artists in their studios and hand pick work, with other artists, I’ve asked them to bring back work I really liked from an exhibition during the year and with a handful of other artists whose work I’m very familiar with, I’ve just asked them to choose something they’d like to exhibit and I’ve gone from there.” Ahn Wells

This year’s exhibition celebrates not only 3 years presenting exhibitions for viewing and purchase in the Hamilton gallery space, it also celebrates the galleries commitment to representing Newcastle based artists and promoting them outside of this area. Gallery 139 Artists are Dino Consalvo, John Heaney, Peter Lankas, Helene Leane, Paul Maher and Olivia Parsonage, with all these artists having work included in Gallery 139 presents exhibitions over the past 2 years. 

Gallery 139 takes a break over the Christmas/ New Year period and returns in 2018 with its second fundraising exhibition for Hunter Animal Watch Inc THE DOGGIE SHOW opening on Saturday 13 December 2-4pm.

In Convergence the art practices of three Hunter based artists are connected through shared approaches to texture, colour and close observance of the natural and manufactured world.

Giselle Penn known for her utilitarian pieces in Handmade Felt has for this exhibition assembled small offcuts from felt projects with other textured surfaces, coiled forms and collected objects into small scale sculptures. Her philosophy for creating begins with the forage, and collecting of components that speak to the moment. Then comes the arrangement and following of intuition to make the connection between material and idea.

Drawn to that which is overlooked and disregarded, Susan Ryman (below) lifts observations of her surroundings, floods them with colour-saturated light and creates a strange and sumptuous new world using layers of contour conscious texture. In these unobtrusive works, narratives are an undefined whisper that viewers are free to explore.

Prue Sailer (below) explores themes based on wildlife and habitat conservation. She represents the multi-faceted character of our unique native wildlife through traditional drawing and painting techniques.

ARTIST BIOS

GISELLE PENN has been making and exhibiting in Newcastle since the early 1990’s. Born and educated in Newcastle her practice began with the hand skills passed onto her by a family of makers and menders. Giselle continues with a production based practice of Handmade Felt items simultaneous to her Art Practice. Re-curing themes in her work include fragmented memory, the dissolving of the ego and the potency of the present.   

SUSAN RYMAN was born late 1955 in Marrickville, completed a Diploma in Art Education at the National Art School and Alexander Mackie CAE in Sydney from 1975 – 1978 and 3 years later, successfully completed the Graduate Diploma in Art at Newcastle College of Advanced Education. The usual balancing act of teaching, family, working in arts administration, travelling and maintaining a visual arts practice with consistent solo, group and touring exhibitions in various NSW Regional Galleries as well as commercial galleries in Sydney and Newcastle, has shaped her life. In 2015 Susan was awarded a PhD in Natural History Illustration by the University of Newcastle. Inescapable life experience, influences and knowledge feed a fully ripened and intensely personal visual form.

PRUE SAILER is a Newcastle-based artist working in traditional drawing and
painting media. The natural world provides the inspiration and motivation for her practice
and underpins her teaching in Natural History Illustration at the University of Newcastle. Recurring themes in her work centre on aspects of nature that are often overlooked, the conservation of Australian native species and habitats, and concerns about humanity’s impact on the natural environment. She has exhibited regularly over the past 15 years in
commercial and public galleries, both locally and interstate. Her works are held in private collections within Australia and overseas and have been published in Australian Geographic.

"Rockin’ the Suburbs at Gallery 139 combines the work of five local artists in a fresh examination of life in Australian suburbia which, since architect Robin Boyd’s 1960 book, The Australian Ugliness has been more often critiqued than celebrated. Once again the service stations, neon signage and franchised imagery of Peter Lankas’ shopping centres provide the background for Ellie Kaufman’s backyard settings of caravans, long necks and old-school ink where polka dotted, teen beauties besport themselves on supercar bonnets with lascivious intent.

In a series of confidently painted works Jo Shand records a nocturnal excursion around the fringes where lights are dim and dogs appear from the silent darkness  while Dane Tobias takes us inside these suburban houses with a series of small drawings in marker pen whose playful combination of colour and line challenge the accepted perception of suburban banality. Nadia Aurisch concentrates on the repetitive regularity of outer city life with the uniform greyness of her grids of simplified ceramic houses broken by the inclusion of a small number of coloured pieces whose careful placement activates the whole work."

Souvenir, an old French noun meaning ‘to remember’ or ‘occur to mind’; as an object it may have intrinsic value or be a symbol of experience. 

Jen Denzin and Michelle Brodie have a shared interest in experience and memory. Their two-person exhibition entitled Roughly the Same Size Souvenirs brings various material experiments into focus through paintings and assemblage. Whilst Denzin and Brodie’s works remain exclusive of each other, their shared investment in collecting things and nostalgia tie the practices of these two artists together. The experiences of travel are collected by these two artists to create individual ‘souvenirs’ in which several coincidental motifs emerge. The artists are motivated by memory, nostalgia and trace and this exhibition is their expression of that.

Michelle Brodie presents a unique visual language of her lived experience of travel, desire, whimsy. Her paintings are strong compositions of dynamic colour and taciturn shapes. The paintings often have a humble beginning, a mash-up of a few photos or drawings. Brodie transforms these initial memories into a new, more plastic, more symbolic experience and thus the image is loaded with baggage - alter egos, symbolic figures, boats, cargo, rubble, rocks- all of which show her connectivity to art and history. She is a passionate painter exploring ideas on every canvas.

Jen Denzin creates rags to riches assemblages. They are dazzling and vivid magical mementos. Denzin uses a range of materials, including op shop finds, old pieces of clothing and mountains of sequins, to convey a broad range of experiences, both internal and external. Gaudy cruise ships, ceramic root vegetables and marine flags form a collection of observations gleaned from a recent cruise in the Pacific Islands, a general reflection on Australian history and Australia-Pacific relations. She is an alchemist with a gift for turning the ordinary into the extraordinary.

Art comment on mining

ARTIST Penny Dunstan has explored the impact of mining on the land through art. 

Her work questions the very notion of “rehabilitation” of land post-mining. 

Dunstan has three works in a new group show, Beneath, currently on exhibition at Gallery 139.

“What is this new thing called rehabilitated land?” is the question, her work explores.

“There is 23,000 hectares of it, so far,” Dunstan said. 

“It all comes from my walking through rehabilitated land.” 

In one of the works, How Shall We Look, Dunstan uses the pages of a mine closure report as her canvas. The report becomes part of the work as she applies chalk, charcoal, graphite and ink.  

“It’s the rehabilitation section,” she said. “I’ve printed it out and I’ve drawn over the top what the micro and the macro look like when you are walking over that land.”

The work shows the layers of “human intervention” on the land.

“The trucks that move backwards and forwards …  it comes out as brush work, the words in the document, the bits I obscure, put in or take away,” she said. 

This work relates to Rix’s Creek, near Singleton. The 22 pages of the report become individual components of the work that piece together into one larger piece. 

“Mines are construed to be a 20 year land use, and then everything is supposed to go back to normal,” she said. “But there is no way back … because everything has been so reconstructed. 

“In the mine report they list all the things that should be there, that were there in the past, but when you walk through the land it’s all different.” 

A second work, titled Void, plays with Kazimir Malevich’s 1915 painting Black Square. The work is made from coal sourced from Mount Arthur mixed with a medium. 

The third work Continuity explores the impact of mining on aquifers. 

Also exhibiting in Beneath are: Toni Amidy, Nina Battley, Nathan Keogh, Mandy Robinson, James Murphy, and Ainslie Ivin-Smith. 

The exhibition runs until October 8 at Gallery 139, 139 Beaumont Street, Hamilton.

OLIVIA Parsonage’s charming exhibition at Gallery 139 has two dozen small fabric pictures on paper exploring the human condition with wit and whimsy. There are cold and grumpy morning walkers, bathers submerged in a forest pool, earnest conversations between red and fawn personages and various forms of unstable transport, all featuring animated embroidered faces.

Of course, charm is only the tip of the iceberg. Olivia Parsonage is vastly skilled at creating fabric collage, often using the most unpromising materials to dramatic effect. Somehow she manipulates the sewing machine to work on a minute scale. Somehow she is able to keep the work flat and the edges crisp.

It is good news that this self-effacing artist is now part of the Gallery 139 stable, which has the means to promote and exhibit its artists well beyond Newcastle.

Art on this big, bad land

WHEN US-born conceptual artist Laura Wilson arrived in Australia in 1992 she wondered what it meant to be Australian. She now believes she knows the answer. 

“I thought more about indigenous people and thought about what everyone has in common when dealing with the landscape,” Wilson said.

“I distilled it down to resilience … and it’s different to any other country that I have seen.

“If there is a flood, say in Queensland, people might shed a tear, but then they say, ‘We just have to get on with it.’

“It reminds me of Ned Kelly and when he was in his last minutes of life he said, ‘Such is life.’”

Wilson will take part in a group show Big Bad Lands at Gallery 139 this month. 

“It looks at the harshness of the Australian landscape,” Wilson said. 

“I originally come from Colorado, so it’s easier to look at Australia objectively.”

Wilson is exhibiting 10 pieces of work in the show, some of which reference the banksia tree. 

“I thought about what was the most resilient flora, and it’s the banksia,” Wilson said. “Then I looked at bushrangers.

“So I have put the two together and I have bushrangers and banskia.”

In a nod to Sidney Nolan one of the works has an obscure reference to his Ned Kelly series. 

“Sidney Nolan’s work is just beautiful, and it’s iconic and Australians just seem to love his work,” she said.

“It’s a slight nod to him.” 

Wilson’s works also explore Australian tourism. The exhibition will feature a large wall hanging which quotes advice given to tourists about facing-off with “aggressive magpies”, how to deal with an angry kangaroo, redback spiders, venomous snakes, bushfires, crocodiles and sharks. 

Big Bad Lands opens at 2pm on July 22, with the exhibition running from July 20 until August 6. 

The show also features Sally Reynolds, Belinda Street, Libby Cusick, Catherine Grieve, Malcolm Sands, Shelagh Lummis and Gwendoline Lewis.

Newcastle based artist Dino Consalvo traverses Sydney, painting the bridges that join the city together. From the iconic Sydney Harbour Bridge to the concrete arch of the Gladsville Bridge, Consalvo captures these structures from angles and through abstraction that will make the viewer question, ponder and fully appreciate the beauty of these modern architectural forms.

TOME AND FLANAGAN

Gallery 139 presents Ambedo, a bright and vibrant exhibition of paintings from Mathew Tome, who is head teacher at Newcastle Art School, and former Newcastle resident Julia Flanagan. 

Both artists are widely known from their extensive exhibition schedule in recent years. Both have exhibited at Gallery 139 before, but this is the first time they have shown together and the interaction of their diverse styles adds energy and strength to the exhibition. Flanagan’s colourful and carefully constructed abstracts, with their links to Cubism and Howard Hodgkin, bounce off Tome’s further reduced and textured tonal planes with their simple linear overlays. Until June 4.

This is Helene's third solo exhibition as a Gallery 139 Artist. A recent move to the Hunter Valley, to the district where the majestic Australian Red Cedar Tree once called home, has informed the making of this series. Including Helene's signature monotype prints, abstract encaustic and small-scale paintings. 

A selection of this series was exhibited at Janet Clayton Gallery earlier this year, for this exhibition, Helene brings the entire series to Gallery 139 which includes monotypes, encaustics and paintings.

HELENE Leane has found an ideal subject for her skilfully layered monotypes in the leaves of the cedar tree. Once common in the rainforest valleys of Eastern Australia, this imposing tree has become increasingly rare since furniture makers first discovered the potential of its easily worked warm-hued timber soon after the first European settlement.

Helene Leane’s paints can only hint at this cultural background, while focusing on the large handsome leaves with their composite structure.

Her new show is at Gallery 139 in Hamilton.

Many of these works were shown recently in Sydney.

A wall of small paintings compensate for the lack of the unifying leaf with misty distances and hints of landform.

An exhibition exploring human mortality through the immortalisation of
the last words spoken by people of note throughout history using photography, machine embroidery & animated text.

Simone Paterson is our first International Artist to exhibit in Gallery 139. Educated in Australia, with a PhD from The University of Newcastle, and a MFA from the University of Sydney, SCA. She is now an Associate Professor, Virginia Tech, U.S.A where she is the Chair of Undergraduate Studies in Creative Technologies. Her international art exhibits include, fabric forms, photography and interactive video/ animations. We are delighted to be exhibiting Simone for a 3 week solo exhibition. 

Simone Paterson's Newcastle goes back 15 or more years when she studied and lectured in Photomedia at The University of Newcastle, Australia, and was the Director of Watt Space Student Gallery of the University of Newcastle for 3 years. Simone has been living in Virginia, USA teaching and exhibiting. She returned to Newcastle in 2014 and exhibited at Maitland Regional Art Gallery and in 2012 she exhibited at PODspace gallery.

Through a series of monotype printmaking, Helene Leane explores the history of the majestic Australian Red Cedar Tree.  

A recent move to the Hunter Valley, to the district where this tree once called home, has informed the making of these works which celebrate the patterns, delicate layers and changing colours of the leaves of a now re-planted Cedar landscape.
