Paul Maher is a Newcastle-based artist whose practice centres on suburban landscape painting and drawing. Paul is a compulsive sketcher, who habitually fills A5 art journals with drawings of suburban Newcastle life. Through daily drawing expeditions, Paul captures his changing built environment, the antics of people and their pets in parks within a urban coastal setting. Paul aims to translate the directness of his drawing style and a familiar Australian landscape into his paintings and iPad drawings.
Paul first started exhibiting in Newcastle in the late 1980s after graduating from The University of Newcastle in 1984 with a Bachelor of Arts (Visual Arts) and a Post-Graduate Diploma - Painting in 1985. He first exhibited at galleries including Nick Mitzevich's 249 Gallery, The Lock Up's John Paynter Gallery and Von Bortouch Galleries and has continued to maintain a steady exhibition practice while first working as a secondary school art teacher and now as an urban designer. His work is held in the Newcastle Art Gallery as well as private collections in Australia and overseas. He played a leading role in public and community art projects that flourished in Newcastle following the 1989 earthquake. His public art included several large-scale post-earthquake murals across the City and pavemental mosaics which are still in place on Beaumont Street Hamilton and Lake Macquarie City Art Gallery sculpture park.
In 2015, Paul was a finalist in the Kilgour Art Prize, Newcastle Art Gallery. In 2016 a finalist in the Redlands Art Prize. In 2017 he was a finalist in the Brisbane Art Prize and in October 2017, he undertook a Police Point Artist in Residence Program coordinated by the Mornington Peninsula Shire’s Arts & Culture, Victoria and will be exhibiting works from this program in Gallery 139 from 15 March - 1 April 2018.
Paul's first exhibition at Gallery 139 was In this city's side from 28 Oct - 14 Nov 2015.
