Peter describes this exhibition as “Fragments of time sewn together”, where out of the most mundane can arise an insight into an object or subject which can excite, stimulate and entertain. For Peter his paintings are narratives or songs that have evolved over years of painting. He talks about being both fascinated and fearful of the task of throwing fragments of thought together in a medium (painting) that has such long history and tradition.
Peter has completely submerged himself in the alchemy of painting. He now makes his own oil paint, mediums, varnishes, glazes, the whole basic painting kitchen, from scratch. As it was done in the early Renaissance, using where he can natural materials. It is the pleasure of discovery, the tactile experience of a chef with a hint of rudimentary science that has Peter hooked. Over the years, Peter has refined the process making it simple and versatile beyond belief.

Peter Lankas is a Newcastle based artist who is fascinated with the everyday, specifically suburbia, exploring the formal visual feasts and subtle narratives on offer inside the ordinary. His painting practice extends from the studio to the outdoors, exploring the ‘en plein air’ tradition of painting outin the landscape. This direct approach to painting has led him to adopt the ‘alla prima technique’ in the studio, mostly completing paintings in one session, which enhances the concept of capturing a brief moment in time.
