group exhibition to coincide with Newcastle Writers Festival 2018

MEET THE ARTISTS: Sunday 8 April 11.30am 

An exhibition about the comforts of storytelling and the influence reading stories has on our lives. 

Stories- are human experiences, the core of experience. Through stories we share joy passions, sadness and hardship. Stories are a primal form of communication, timeless, linked to ancient traditions. They connect us to a larger self and universal truth. They are about collaboration, connection, and engagement through emotion. We share meaning and purpose, overcome defences and differences, understand ourselves better and find commonality with others. Stories are the vehicle, the conduit, the avenue, the method, the safety net. - Laura Wilson

Exhibiting artists: Susan Ryman, Ahn Wells, Barbara Nanshe, Laura Wilson, Graham Wilson, Jane Blackall, Peter Read. 
 Susan Ryman  No. 22, No. 35, No.442, No.36, No.24  23 x 18cm framed each hand varnished print on Canson Photographique 300gsm from original drawing by Susan Ryman  These images are derived from non-fiction sources such as Time Magazine, various books on the history of embroidery, tapestry, samplers and tatting, and a plethora of illustrated art history texts which are accompanied by an all too often egotistical tale of events. The Flashcards are unnamed in the hope that they might spark a personal memory so that you, the viewer, might tell your own story.

 above Jane Blackall  Brumbies  2018 paper cut   The Silver Brumby by Elyne Mitchell.  Jane read this book first as a horse-mad teenager growing up in Scotland, and then Moon Filly by the same author. She loved them so much as they filled my imagination with the beautiful wild horses of Australia.   below Peter Read  Pariah dog pondering  2017 mixed media 45 x 34 x 33cm   From the artist's favourite author JG Farrell and the story “Seize of Krishnapur” where the inhabitants of a city become so ravaged by hunger they resort to eating their own dogs.

 below Graham Wilson  The ties that bind us  2018  Inspired by one of my favourite authors and one of my favourite books.  Invisible Cities by Italo Calvino. The book is a collection of short stories. It is imagining Marco Polo describing cities to Genghis Khan. At first Marco describes real cities then when he realizes that the great Khan will never see the world he starts to describe imaginary cities. This is one of my all time favourites.   Graham Wilson

 above Ahn Wells  Memoir 1 2017  tracing paper cotton 150x150cm  This 'paper-quilt' is made from the photocopied pages of the artist's favourite children's book. The Korean Cinderella which included both english and Korean text. It was read to the artist by her adoptive mother as a way to involve Korean culture into her upbringing.

 above Laura Wilson  Gateway  Series 1-7 2018 photomedia on cotton paper  Sitting by the shores of a newly frozen lake high in the mountains of Colorado, I observed the ice forming in lines, cracking and creating an organic network, much like the neural connections of the brain. In creating the 'gateway' series, I considered how stories, even three lines, can activate these connections and trigger imagination - the artwork - a gateway to the literary mind. -  Laura Wilson
